Vancouver: Canadaís Best-Kept Skiing Secret
When it comes to variety, seasoned skiers recognise Canada as one of the premiere destinations for a holiday spent on the powder. But the true enthusiast recognises British Columbia, with its 55-plus resorts, as the heart of the Canadian ski scene. It is, after all, home to the Whistler-Blackcomb resort, the largest ski resort by some measure in North America.
At 126km away, Vancouver is little more than a gateway to Whistler-Blackcomb. That said, families looking to book a ski holiday in Canada would do well to consider Vancouver. The city boasts three popular resorts all within a half hour drive from the centre, making for a fantastic base from which to explore the sounding mountains. The pick of these has to be Grouse Mountain, which apart from featuring much-loved snowboarding and skiing facilities, it also features a mountain-top iceskating ring, along with helicopter rides and North Americaís largest aerial tramway.
If further proof were needed as to the cityís reputation for world-class winter sports, harken back to last February, when Vancouver hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics. A resounding success, itís now considered the definitive Winter Olympics model by the IOC, with IOC president Jacques Rogge stating that ìthe way Vancouver embraced the Games was extraordinary. This is really something unique and has given a great atmosphere for these Games.î As recommendations go, its tough to beat that.
